What is the SBI PO 2026 Eligibility Criteria?

Before you apply, make sure you satisfy all the eligibility conditions prescribed by SBI. Eligibility is based on four factors:

• Nationality
• Age
• Educational qualification
• Category Relaxations
  

Nationality

You are eligible to apply if you are: An Indian citizen, or A subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) holding an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

Age Limit for SBI PO 2026

To apply for SBI PO 2026, you must have been born between 2 April 1996 and 1 April 2005 (both dates inclusive). In other words, your age should be between 21 and 30 years as on 1 April 2026.

OBC age relaxation is available only to candidates belonging to the Non-Creamy Layer. Candidates falling under the Creamy Layer must apply under the Unreserved (UR) category. Your OBC certificate must be valid as per the dates specified in the official notification.

SBI PO 2026 Educational Qualification: Degree, Stream & Final Year Eligibility

You must be a graduate in any discipline from a recognised university or hold an equivalent qualification approved by the Central Government. Engineering, Commerce, Arts, Science, Law, Medicine — all streams are equally valid. There is no minimum percentage requirement.

I am in final year, can I apply for SBI PO 2026?

Before You Apply: 4 Things Every SBI PO 2026 Aspirant Must Know 

• CIBIL matters. No minimum score is required, but if you have any pending loan or credit card default, clear it before your joining date — or carry an NOC from your lender.
• Aadhaar verification is mandatory. Keep it linked to your active mobile number before filling the form.
• You will sign a ₹2 lakh bond to serve SBI for a minimum of 3 years. Resign before that, and it gets recovered.
• Posting can be anywhere in India. If you are from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, or Himachal — there is no guarantee of a local posting. Factor this in before you start preparing.

• Step 1: Visit sbi.bank.in

• Step 3: Open Current Opening Section
• Step 4: Register with a valid email ID and mobile number — keep both active till final results
• Step 5: Fill in personal, academic, and category details carefully
• Step 6: Upload photograph, signature, thumb impression, and handwritten declaration as per size specifications

SBI PO Prelims 2026 Exam Pattern: Sections, Marks & Time

The SBI PO Prelims 2026 is an online objective test — qualifying in nature. Your Prelims marks do not count in the final merit list. You only need to clear the overall cutoff to advance to Mains

Key points:

• No sectional cutoff — only overall cutoff applies
• Negative marking: 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer
• No penalty for unattempted questions

Approximately 10 times the vacancies are shortlisted for Mains. With 1,500 vacancies this year, expect roughly 15,000 candidates across categories to be called for Mains.

SBI PO 2026 Mains Exam Pattern (Objective + Descriptive)

The SBI PO 2026 Preliminary Examination is only a qualifying test, so the marks you score in Prelims are not considered for the final merit list. Your real competition begins in the Mains Examination. As per the latest SBI PO 2026 notification, the combined score of the Mains Examination (Objective + Descriptive) carries 75% weightage in the final selection, while the Group Exercise and Interview together contribute the remaining 25%. Immediately after the Objective Test, candidates must also appear for the 30-mark Descriptive Test, which forms part of the Mains Examination.

Task 1: Email Writing

In this task, you'll write a professional email based on a banking situation, such as a customer complaint, a request to a branch manager, or an internal office communication.

The examiner checks whether your email is clear, professional, and follows the correct format. Keep your language simple and formal.

How to prepare: Practice writing short emails every day. Focus on the correct format, professional tone, and clear communication. On exam day, you should be able to write the format without thinking.

Task 2: Situation Analysis

In this task, you'll be given a banking or workplace situation and asked to analyse it and suggest a solution.

The examiner checks whether you can identify the problem, think logically, and recommend practical solutions.

How to prepare: Practice different banking scenarios regularly. Start by identifying the problem, explain the reasons, suggest practical solutions, and end with the expected outcome. This is the same structured approach followed at Aptitude360 to help students write clear and well-organised answers in the SBI PO Mains.

Task 3: Report Writing or Precis Writing

You may be asked to write either a Report or a Precis.

Report Writing: Write your answer in a formal format with headings such as Introduction, Findings, Recommendations, and Conclusion. Keep your language simple and professional.

Precis Writing: Read the passage carefully and summarise it in about one-third of its original length while keeping the main idea intact.

Improve Your Typing Speed

The SBI PO descriptive paper is typed on a computer. To finish all the questions on time, try to reach a typing speed of 30–35 words per minute (WPM).

Many students prepare English but forget to practise typing. At Aptitude360, we've found that slow typing is one of the main reasons students cannot complete the descriptive paper.

Phase III: Psychometric Test, Group Exercise, and Interview

If you clear the SBI PO 2026  Mains, you'll be called for Phase III. Don't take this stage lightly—it carries 25% weightage in the final merit list.

Psychometric Test

This is a personality test. It doesn't carry direct marks, but your responses are shared with the interview panel.

My advice is simple—don't try to outsmart the test. Just answer honestly and stay consistent. There are no perfect answers here.

Group Exercise (20 Marks)

In this round, you'll discuss a topic or solve a problem with other candidates.

Many students think they need to speak the most to impress the panel. That's not true. Listen carefully, respect others' opinions, and speak only when you have something meaningful to add. A good team player always makes a better impression than someone who keeps interrupting.

Personal Interview (30 Marks)

This is where the panel gets to know you. They'll ask about your education, why you want to join SBI, current affairs, banking, and sometimes simple situation-based questions.

SBI PO 2026 Cutoff – Expected Cutoff & Previous Year Category-wise Cutoff

The SBI PO 2026 cutoff is one of the most searched topics after the notification is released. Many students ask me, "What score should I target?"

Note: The SBI PO 2026 Mains exam carries 230 marks because the descriptive paper has been reduced from 50 marks to 30 marks. So, don't compare the raw cutoff marks of 2025 and 2026 directly.

Keep improving your mock test scores, analyse your mistakes, and aim to score well above the previous year's cutoff. That's the best way to stay on the safer side.My advice is to stop worrying about the cutoff and focus on your preparation.There is no fixed safe score because the cutoff changes every year.

SBI PO 2026 Preparation Strategy (6–7 Week Study Plan)

If you're wondering how to prepare for SBI PO 2026, here's the 6–7 week study plan I recommend to my students. This is the same approach we follow with students at Aptitude360, Chandigarh, whether they're college students or working professionals from Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Zirakpur, or nearby areas.

Weeks 1–2: Know Where You Stand

Start by taking a full-length mock test or solving a previous year's paper. Don't worry about your score. The goal is to identify your strengths and weaknesses.

I always recommend starting with a previous year's paper because it gives you a realistic idea of the exam. You can begin with our SBI PO 2024 Previous Year Paper.

Once you know where you stand, spend the next two weeks strengthening your basics in Quant, Reasoning, and English. Focus on accuracy before speed.

Weeks 3–5: Build Speed and Accuracy

Now it's time to practise every day.

• Quantitative Aptitude: Focus on Data Interpretation, Arithmetic, Number Series, and Quadratic Equations.

• Reasoning Ability: Spend most of your time on Puzzles and Seating Arrangements. Also practise Syllogism, Inequalities, and Coding-Decoding.

• English Language: Read daily and practise Reading Comprehension, Cloze Test, Error Detection, Vocabulary, and Grammar.

Along with your daily practice, keep solving sectional tests and previous year questions.

Weeks 6–7: Mock Tests and Revision

Take at least two full-length mock tests every week.

One thing I always tell students at Aptitude360 is this: don't just take mock tests—analyse them. Spend time understanding every mistake because that's where real improvement happens.

If you're confident about the Prelims, start preparing for the Mains as well. Begin reading banking current affairs and practise one Email, one Situation Analysis, and one Report or Precis every alternate day. Also practise typing for 20 minutes daily.

SBI PO vs IBPS PO vs Private Banks – Which One Should You Choose?

Many students ask me whether they should prepare for SBI PO, IBPS PO, or apply directly to private banks. The answer depends on your career goals.

Here's a simple comparison.

My Advice:

If your goal is a government banking career, I recommend preparing for both SBI PO and IBPS PO together. The syllabus is largely similar, so you can prepare for both exams at the same time.

If you're just starting your preparation, you can also apply for SBI Clerk and IBPS Clerk. These exams give you another opportunity to enter the banking sector while continuing your preparation for officer-level exams.

Private banks can also be a good choice, especially if you prefer corporate banking, faster role changes, or city-based postings. However, the work environment, benefits, and career progression can differ from one bank to another.
